Dr. Denise Wooten for Texas State House District 63 on Equality and Diversity

Every individual is entitled to respect and nondiscrimination.

  • It is the responsibility of government to ensure that members of every ethnic and sexual minority group, along with those who are disabled, feel safe and protected in public, at school, and in their workplace.

  • The Republican platform explicitly opposes same sex marriage and recognition of transgender people, and calls for barring transgender individuals from school district roles. The Democratic platform supports comprehensive non discrimination protections and marriage equality.

While it would be wonderful if diversity were celebrated and valued, at minimum, people deserve safety and tolerance. As your State Representative, I will:

  • Oppose discriminatory legislation targeting LGBTQ+ Texans and other marginalized groups

  • Support nondiscrimination protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations

Every Texan deserves to feel safe, valued, and protected — in their home, their workplace, and their community. That's not a political statement; it's a basic standard of decency. As your representative, I would fight to ensure that nondiscrimination protections cover housing, employment, and public accommodations for all Texans — including LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and ethnic minorities. Government's job isn't to look the other way when people face discrimination; it's to ensure that everyone has a fair shot. I oppose legislation like SB 12 that restricts how our public schools can support diverse students. Our schools should be places where every child sees themselves reflected and supported, not places where educators are told to look away from a student's identity or struggles. I also believe that diversity in our communities — in our workplaces and our neighborhoods — makes Texas stronger. While I think it would be wonderful for diversity to be celebrated, my minimum standard as a legislator is simple: every Texan must be safe and treated with respect, period.
